Lead Pastor

Hillsboro First Baptist Church
Posted: 11/23/2022
Salary/Range:
Location
Hillsboro, OR
Description:

Reports to: Board of Elders
Reporting to the Lead Pastor: All pastoral and ministry team leaders

The Lead Pastor is to be a man who knows that God called him to be a pastor who leads the
flock with the love that Christ demonstrated when He washed the disciples’ feet (John 13).
He must believe that the whole Bible is literally inspired by the Holy Spirit. He must believe,
teach, and defend our statement of faith. He is to be totally committed to equipping church
members to fulfill our mission: Love God, Love People, Make Disciples, Following Jesus. He
should lead church members to fulfill our aspirational goals. He will be sensitive to the Holy
Spirit’s leadership to take appropriate opportunities to cast vision for more faithful ways for our
church to embody our mission and aspirations in order to penetrate our world with the light of
His Word.

He should lead our church by setting a good example of servant-leadership, with the
humility of Jesus Christ (Philippians 2:5-8)—

1. In his home: If married, he must care for his wife and children in keeping with
qualifications for elders that he must manage his own family well and teach his children
to obey with proper respect (1 Timothy 3:4).

2. With his team: He will recruit, disciple, and train additional servant-leaders. He must
love, care, and pray for and with them, supporting and protecting his team leaders by
providing them with clear organizational directions, training, and plentiful resources for
them to have every opportunity to be effective in their ministries. He will encourage them
privately and publicly acknowledge their successes with thankfulness and rewards.

3. With the board of elders: He will serve with the Board of Elders as the leader among
equals submitting to their authority. He serves the board as a non-voting member who
presents first drafts for their approval before changing old ministries and launching new
ministries and visions.

4. With the congregation: Like our Good Shepherd, he will serve and nourish the body
with weekly expositional preaching (2 Timothy 4:1-4; Titus 1:9) He will train others to
handle the Word effectively so that they can train others to do the same (2 Timothy 2:2).
He will, personally and through others, provide pastoral care through counseling,
visitation, crisis situations, and prayer. He will oversee the ordinances of Communion
and Baptism. He will oversee weddings and funerals.

5. With the culture outside of the church: He will love them, attend to them, go to them,
be with them with integrity, transparency, warmth, and hospitality. He will pursue
meaningful relationships with community leaders.

Education: We prefer a Master of Theology degree but will give fair evaluation to each
applicant individually.

Experience: We desire 5-10 years of pastoral and preaching experience.

Expectations: We realize that the Lead Pastor needs each one in our church to follow his lead
and be willing to be equipped to do their part (Ephesians 4:11-16). We know this ministry is
arduous as the Lead Pastor is the tip of the spear in a spiritual warfare. We know that no pastor
possesses all the gifts necessary to build a church. What we are looking for is a pastor-teacher
who understands his role to equip us with the Word, modeling the mind of Christ, depending on
the indwelling Holy Spirit. If married, we anticipate that his wife and children will be involved
in the church and supportive of our church like other members who actively participate in the
worship service and be involved in ministry as the Holy Spirit leads them.

Compensation: It is our desire that our Lead Pastor and his family will be cared for adequately.
This is a full-time pastoral position, and we intend to provide a compensation level that will
enable the wife to remain in the home and not outside the home if she chooses to do so. The
compensation package will take into account the unique and challenging housing situation in the
Hillsboro area.
