Harvest Church (New Hampton, IA) – Pastor
The Big Picture
Harvest Church (harvestchurchsearch.com) seeks the man God has already called to be its next pastor.
The church was established in 1893 and flourished with the American Baptist Churches USA until 2002. Because of growing liberalism in the ABCUSA, Harvest affiliated with the Baptist General Conference, now Converge. In 2019, Harvest joined Disciple Heritage Fellowship (DHF), a non-denominational fellowship of evangelical churches that mostly come from the Disciples of Christ denomination.
Letter from Retiring Pastor
Over the years, when I’ve been in the process of a pastoral search, I’ve been struck by the number of churches that describe themselves in glowing terms, how great they are, how open to change, how ready they are for fresh leadership. But too often I’ve also known those churches well enough to know those claims are fantasies, either self-delusions or denials meant to lure a pastor to come.
I asked Harvest’s search committee to allow me to add this letter to the search site in order to tell you that the good things this church advertises are true. I’ve been here six years. I have found a congregation of loving people who are genuinely open to change and leadership, who want to get behind their pastor and see the church thrive. They love Jesus and want to grow in Him. That’s not just talk, it’s true.
I’m retiring as I enter my 70s, not because of any conflict or any flaws in the church, but because I see that I don’t have the energy and vision this church needs and deserves for its next phase of life. I’ve been treated very well by Harvest Church. I’ve found a church ready to try new things, ready to step out in faith. Of course, they need to be persuaded and need to build trust before they jump in, but I’ve never served a church so willing to follow good leadership.
This church needs a pastor who loves Jesus and loves small town churches and is ready to love and lead in the context of Midwest small-town culture.
No church is perfect, and Harvest faces challenges going into the future, but they are ready to face those challenges with a spiritually grounded pastor with fresh vision for the coming days.
Yours in Christ,
Doug Harvey, Retiring Pastor
New Hampton, population 3,494, is the county seat of Chickasaw County. It is located in northeast Iowa, thirty-seven miles north of Waterloo and seventy-five miles south of Rochester, Minnesota. Chickasaw County is primarily agricultural. Several industries are located within the city and provide multiple employment opportunities. New Hampton is a wonderful place to raise a family. New Hampton has a hospital, medical clinic, three dental offices, three offices of chiropractic, optometry clinic, public library, full-service grocery store, wellness center, swimming pool, public pre-K – 12, and Catholic pre-K – 8 schools.
The ideal candidate will be someone who loves the small-town life and wants to put down roots in this community. This small-town church is held together by relationships and not by a structure. A “people person” will best fit into this atmosphere. Harvest is a positive and flexible congregation. An ideal pastor will have deep evangelical convictions held with grace. An angry pastor or someone who needs one hundred percent agreement on all issues will not fit. “Joyfully pointing people to Jesus” is Harvest’s mission statement. The man with some theological training and ministry experience would be ideal, but not required. The pastor must have a faith compatible with Harvest’s statement of faith. Solid Biblical preaching and teaching presented with grace and a sense of humor would fit well here. Pastor Doug has announced his decision to transition into retirement after six positive years of faithful service to the congregation. He will serve until the new pastor arrives. A younger family man with children would ideally take Harvest into its next phase of growth and service.
Harvest Church presently provides an approximate $61,000.00 total compensation package, including cash salary, housing allowance, medical insurance, retirement fund, and personal development reimbursements. These items are negotiable and will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience.
