Church Overview
College Avenue Baptist Church (“College Ave”) is a community of approximately 400 Christians who are
striving to understand, engage with, and serve our surrounding community and city for the sake of Jesus
Christ. Our mission is to be a vibrant church family reproducing Christ-followers from the local
neighborhood to the ends of the earth. In the power of the Holy Spirit, we are devoted to the authority
of God’s Word, Christ-centered fellowship, transforming worship, and Spirit-filled prayer (Acts 2:42). In
obedience to Christ, we are devoted to loving God, loving our neighbors, and loving one another in all the
ways Jesus loves us (John 15:9-13). In faithfulness to Christ’s mission, we are focused on reproducing
Christ-followers among the diverse communities of our world (Matthew 28:18-20). College Ave was
founded in 1892, and in this, our 130th year of ministry, we are focusing our prayers and energy on
drawing new believers to Christ and to our church through the power of the Holy Spirit, training and
empowering disciple-makers, and engaging, connecting, and growing Christ-followers through our
ministries.

Community Overview
San Diego is the 8th largest city in the United States, with a total population of approximately 1.4 million
people. Located in southern California, San Diego is referred to as “America’s Finest City” and is bordered
by the Pacific Ocean to the west and Mexico to the south. Known for its idyllic climate, beautiful beaches,
tourist attractions, and military bases, San Diego is a unique and diverse Californian city.
College Ave’s campus is strategically located in the College Area of east San Diego, within walking distance
of San Diego State University. Our immediate surrounding neighborhood is a mix of student housing,
residential homes, and dense urban living. The population is extremely diverse in socio-economic
background and ethnicity, and faith receptivity is generally considered to be low. The majority of our
congregation does not live in the immediate surrounding neighborhood, is significantly older than the
local average age, and has been committed to Christ and College Ave for decades; therefore, bridging this
gap between our congregation and our community is a priority.

Job Overview
We are prayerfully seeking God’s direction to identify a full-time Senior Pastor who is, first and foremost,
a leader and a teacher. He leads with a clear vision and a purposeful direction and is therefore easy to
follow. He enthusiastically goes after creative ideas and solutions, empowers laypeople who need to be
equipped and unleashed for Christ, and powerfully proclaims God’s Word in a variety of ways. He is a risktaker who proactively identifies challenges and resolves problems, doing so with minimum relational
turmoil. He brings people together in unified teams to develop and implement effective strategies, and he
is excellent at promoting ideas to others to reach maximum potential and engagement.

Formal Responsibilities
1. Leadership Skills
a. Exhibits the characteristics of a servant leader while effectively leading and shepherding the staff, lay
leadership, and congregation to achieve the church’s mission.
b. Consistently casts a compelling vision by combining a deep understanding of the needs of the
community, the church organization, and the congregation with strategic thinking and creative responses
to opportunities and challenges.
c. Easily inspires confidence throughout the staff and builds consensus throughout the congregation by
realistically assessing issues and taking appropriate actions.
d. Naturally recruits, manages, and develops leaders of all levels into a unified team, empowering and
guiding staff and lay leaders to develop management skills and take ownership over ministries while
maintaining unity of vision and direction.

2. Communication Skills
a. Consistently delivers strong biblical preaching and teaching that is relevant and applicable to people of
diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds as well as those of different levels of spiritual maturity.
b. Comfortably communicates both publicly and one-on-one, with speech and demeanor characterized
by authenticity, approachability, and accountability.
c. Clearly articulates the gospel message with an evangelistic method and approach that is personally
sincere, rooted in Biblical truths, teachable to disciple-makers, and resulting in conversions.
d. Collaborates with worship staff to develop engaging worship experiences that inspire the congregation
to genuine personal worship and growth by application of God’s Word, meet the spiritual needs of all age
groups and levels of spiritual maturity, and result in consistently greater Christ-likeness throughout the
congregation.

3. Relationship Skills
a. Strongly encourages and loves people of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds.
b. Is equally effective at interpersonal communication both as a listener and as a speaker.
c. Discerns, develops, and employs the unique strengths of others to fulfill their God-given purposes.
d. Provides a healing presence in conflicted relationships, both personal and corporate.
e. Effectively shepherds and ministers to all generations to ensure all are equally assimilated to the church
congregation without age gaps.

Qualifications
1. Personal Qualities
a. Meets the New Testament requirements for office as listed in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9 and lives
with integrity as an excellent model of a spiritual example that inspires others to develop attitudes and
behaviors guided by biblical principles.
b. Dedicated to a strong devotional and prayer life demonstrated by an intentional commitment to
honoring his relationship with God above all else.
c. Exhibits an inherent orientation of grace in his relationship with God and to other people.
d. Enthusiastic and passionate when empowering teams and developing vision.
e. Has a heart and desire to reach multi-ethnic groups, both locally and globally.

2. Professional Qualities
a. Has served for at least six years as a Senior Pastor, Associate Pastor, or comparable role in a church of
similar size to College Ave and experienced numerical congregational growth while serving in that role.
b. Has experience directly supervising multiple staff members and working with various leadership teams.
c. Preferably holds a Master’s of Divinity or master’s degree in a relevant field.
d. Agrees with the Doctrinal Statement, Statement of Faith, and Senior Pastor responsibilities published
in the College Avenue Baptist Church Constitution and Operating Procedures Manual.
