JOB TITLE CAFE 180 Volunteer and Kitchen Coordinator Reports To: CAFE 180 Manager, Executive Director, Founder and One Good Turn Board 

 

MISSION CAFE 180’s mission is to provide a meal to all people, regardless of ability to pay.  CAFE 180 is a non profit community restaurant open for lunch 5 days a week.

SUMMARY This position is responsible for helping volunteers and patrons feel welcomed and cared for. This position will also have responsibility in the kitchen as well as at the front counter taking orders and payment from customers and finding jobs for our customers working in exchange for a meal. This position will ensure all people are served a meal with dignity and respect and that CAFE 180’s core values are at the core of all decisions made. 

The CAFE 180 Volunteer and Kitchen Coordinator role is a part time, exempt position who exhibits, lives and teaches the vision, mission and values of CAFE 180. We are a place where all people are welcome, regardless of ability to pay and regardless of life circumstances. CAFE 180 strives to do this through volunteer programs, making all meals “affordable”, and by staying connected in the community.  The person who fulfills this role must have interest in investing in and loving all types of people in a dignified way, leading staff members in a productive and respectful way, and serving nourishing meals.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

Volunteer Orientation, Scheduling and Recruiting

  • Daily greet volunteers with warmth and enthusiasm and offer café orientation materials to read/watch and clarify any questions – will help with volunteers both in the kitchen and outside of the kitchen.
  • Help volunteers in the kitchen transition into tasks: training videos, name tags, hand washing, hair back, aprons, jewelry and valuables stored in appropriate areas, introduction to staff and other volunteers, placement in kitchen.
  • Keep paper binder calendar pages stocked, and labeled. 
  • Update and align online volunteer signup and binder paper version daily.
  • Assist in recruiting volunteers from community, schools, churches, etc.  
  • Continue to find creative ways to ensure volunteer satisfaction and retention. 

 

Kitchen and Dining Area Volunteer Coordination

  • This position will be flexible in working the register and working the kitchen, depending on what is needed that day – needs to be flexible with jobs that are asked of them. 
  • Assists in opening and closing the kitchen.
  • Work the front counter with professionalism, warmth and charm and be prepared to explain cafe concepts, take food orders using proper codes and assess patron donation methods.
  • Ensure the cash register is used correctly and money is secure. Collect money from the register at day end, count, have 2nd person verify the amount and place inside the safe.
  • Meets with Cafe Managers prior to volunteer shifts to plan, direct and supervise the activities of kitchen volunteers, helping to create a warm, welcoming work environment. Aware of the need for flexibility to strategically place volunteers in most needed positions.
  • Work with the manager to determine what needs to be prepped for the day by using the jobs/task board for each volunteer shift.
  • Maintain and update the kitchen volunteer task board daily.
  • Train volunteers on food stations and food prep using picture cards if needed.
  • Check on volunteers to ensure procedures are being followed and that they are engaged and not standing around. 
  • Be prepared to speak with dissatisfied customers, if necessary.
  • Provides leadership and pro-active, positive verbal and non verbal instruction regarding:
    • Food to be prepared
    • Method of preparation
    • Proper equipment to be used
    • Special requirement to complete the task
    • Ways to talk to customers
    • Plate presentation  
  • Maintains a professional and polite demeanor to promote a pleasant kitchen atmosphere for co-workers, volunteers and patrons.
  • Assists in opening and closing the restaurant, following the opening and closing checklist.
  • Attends and participates in all scheduled employee meetings. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Kitchen Manager. 
  • Maintains a clean uniform and appearance. 

Community Service

  • Determine volunteering reason and orient to cafe in corresponding way- (long-term versus 1 time)
  • Be clear on community service volunteer requirements and paper signing.

 

 Coordinate Volunteers Working For Lunch

  • Explain donation system to volunteers.
  • Assign tasks and track completion.
  • Update and laminate task cards.
  • Give volunteers materials needed to complete their assigned task.

  • Ability to handle the following physical demands: 
    • required to stand and walk regularly, occasionally sit 
    • lift and/or move up to 50 pounds 
    • function in work environment that has a moderate noise level 

SCHEDULE
CAFE 180 Volunteer and Kitchen Coordinator schedule will be Tuesday – Saturday from 9:00am – 2 or 3pm, with possible events and meetings outside hours.  An average of 25-30 hours a week.  Position can be flexible with hours/days, if needed with a desired minimum of 20 hours per week. 


COMPENSATION
This position pays $19-20/hour
