Location: Flexible
Pay: $50,000 – $65,000

General Statement of Job Function

The Senior Accountant will assist controller in the oversight and development of accounting staff, as well as assist in the establishment of accounting processes and procedures.  The Senior Accountant is vital element in creating a well-functioning accounting team and ensuring accounting compliance.  This position takes primary responsibility for monthly payroll for the enterprise in addition to other primary accounting duties.  Responsible for all processing of monthly payroll, administration of our external payroll system (Paylocity), reconciliation and payment of employee benefits, and reconciliation of payroll reporting.

Essential Functions

General Ledger Oversight, Analysis and Reconciliation

  • Review and approve entries made in Financial Edge by accounting staff.
  • Analyzes and reconciles key balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis.
  • Review and approve month end bank and account reconciliations of accounting staff.
  • Oversee budget to actual analysis and overall maintenance of the  general ledger.


  • Process and reconcile monthly payroll, including faculty pay, housing allowances, federal work study, etc. 
  • Reconcile and submit payment for employee benefits
  • Account reconciliation and statistical analysis
  • Research and inform management of current payroll tax issues and requirements
  • Provide analytical payroll reports for Director of Finance
  • Establish payroll processes and procedures 
  • Review and revise payroll policies in cooperation with the Director of Financial Services

Tax reporting

  • Reconcile quarterly and year-end tax information returns (941’s, W-2’s, 1042’s, etc.)
  • Establish and maintain tax accounts in other states, as needed

Secondary Functions

Provides accounting oversight and analysis as necessary in the following areas:

  • Ensurance of adequate coverage and customer service in accounts payable, student accounting etc.
  • May assist in month- and year-end reporting, as well as detail financial analysis and project management.
  • Review and recommendation of modifications to accounting systems and procedures
  • Development and documentation of business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls


  • Accounting degree and 3-5 years of accounting experience preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel required, experience with Financial Edge Blackbaud preferred
  • Nonprofit and/or educational accounting experience a definite plus


  • Supervisory experience highly desired
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and outstanding customer service are critical
  • The ability to multi-task and to work as part of a team is essential

Typical Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Normal office working conditions including computer usage may require occasional standing, walking, long periods of sitting, climb stairs, balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
