If you ask Dr. Joseph “Joey” Dodson, Denver Seminary’s Dr. Craig L. Blomberg Endowed Chair of New Testament, what drew him to concentrate on the New Testament, he instantly answers, “Jesus.”

“All of the New Testament is about Him,” he says. He points out that the Old Testament is about Jesus, too, and that he loves the entire Bible for this reason. “The New Testament explains, summarizes, alludes to, and echoes the Old Testament,” he says. “I can study Jesus and get David, Moses, and Isaiah. Littleton, Colo. — Denver Seminary is pleased to welcome Dr. Tremper Longman—renowned Old Testament scholar, professor, and author—as the keynote speaker for the 2025 Shannon Preaching Lectureship and Seminar to be held June 2–5 on its Littleton campus. This 3.5-day event will focus on Big Idea Expository Preaching from the Book of Psalms.

Dr. Longman, Distinguished Scholar and Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies at Westmont College, has written over 30 books including commentaries on Genesis, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Daniel, and Nahum. Recent books include “Confronting Old Testament Controversies: Pressings Questions about Evolution, Sexuality, History, and Violence” (2019) and “The Bible and the Ballot: Using Scripture in Political Decisions (2020).” Dr. Longman’s books have been translated into seventeen different languages.

Dr. Longman will lead ministry leaders, pastors, students, faculty, and others through lectures on 12 selected Psalms, offering expert exegesis and theological insight. In conjunction with these lectures, attendees will engage in sermon development sessions designed to help them prepare a sermon series for use in their local ministry contexts.

Group discussion and peer learning will be facilitated by Dr. Matt Wolf, pastor of Arise Church Denver, and Rev. David Ward, director of Denver Seminary’s Compelling Preaching Initiative. Together, they will help participants reflect on how to faithfully and compellingly communicate the Psalms to contemporary congregations.

“The Psalms have long given voice to the full range of human experience before God—from lament to joy, from fear to faith,” said Rev. Ward. “This seminar is a rare opportunity for pastors and ministry leaders to immerse themselves in these texts with the guidance of one of the Church’s most respected Old Testament scholars. Our hope is that participants leave both inspired and equipped to preach with depth, creativity, and pastoral sensitivity.”

The seminar is open to participants at a cost of $175. Denver Seminary students may register for academic credit under HOM 690 (2 credit hours). Denver Seminary is located at 6399 South Santa Fe Drive, Littleton, 80120.
