The session will seek to deepen understanding of trauma-focused therapy in youth mental health. First, the session will highlight the importance of creating safe, supportive spaces for children to openly express emotions connected to their experiences of trauma. It will introduce the “window of tolerance” as a guiding framework for recognizing levels of emotional regulation and dysregulation, offering clinicians and caregivers a practical tool for intervention.

Second, the session will review and demonstrate coping strategies and relaxation techniques that strengthen children’s ability to manage stress, regulate emotions, and foster resilience. Attendees will then examine evidence-based modalities for trauma processing, including TF-CBT, narrative therapy, play therapy, and EMDR, with discussion of their clinical applications and effectiveness in supporting recovery.
The session will also explore the critical role of parent coaching, emphasizing strategies to help caregivers support children in remaining within their window of tolerance, respond effectively when children move outside of it, and model coping skills in the home.

Finally, the session will conclude with a Q&A session.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Implement strategies for creating safe and supportive environments that enable children to express emotions and experiences related to trauma.
  2. Analyze the application of the “window of tolerance” framework as a guide for determining appropriate levels of therapeutic intervention.
  3. Implement practical coping skills and relaxation techniques that enhance children’s self-regulation and emotional resilience.
  4. Evaluate evidence-based trauma-focused modalities and interventions—including TF-CBT, narrative therapy, play therapy, and EMDR—for their effectiveness in supporting trauma recovery.
  5. Formulate parent coaching strategies that empower caregivers to help children remain within their window of tolerance, provide appropriate support when dysregulated, and model coping practices in the home.
