From Dysregulation to Renewal: Counseling Strategies for Co-Occurring Trauma and Addiction

This CE presentation explores the intersection of trauma and addiction, highlighting the neurobiological, psychological, and relational dynamics that drive the cycles of both suffering and recovery. Together, we’ll explore how trauma-informed and addiction recovery frameworks integrate to support holistic healing. This session will equip participants with evidence-based tools to help clients reclaim agency, rebuild trust, and experience redemptive transformation in the process of recovery.

Jordan Cienski, LPC-S, LCDC, LPC
Jordan Cienski is a Licensed Professional Counselor. Supervisor (LPC-S) and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) in the state of Texas, a LPC in the state of Colorado, and an EMDR Certified clinician recognized by EMDRIA International. A proud graduate of Texas A&M University, Jordan earned a bachelor’s degree in Communications before completing a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Liberty University in 2015. Currently, Jordan is a third-year doctoral student at Denver Seminary in the Counselor Education and Supervision Department.
Jordan’s professional experience spans residential treatment, group practice, and continued private practice ownership, and most recently includes teaching assistantships at both Denver Seminary and Dallas Theological Seminary. A military wife and mom of 3, she is passionate about the healing power of Jesus, evidence-based practices, reading, traveling, and coffee.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify the neurobiological and psychological mechanisms that link trauma and addiction and describe how these processes influence client behavior and recovery outcomes.
- Apply trauma-informed and evidence-based interventions to support clients in rebuilding safety, self-regulation, and relational trust during addiction recovery.
- Integrate holistic treatment approaches that address emotional, cognitive, and physiological dimensions of healing in clients with co-occurring trauma and substance use disorders.
