DC Writing Tutor/Editor

Job Title:DC Writing Tutor/Editor
Reports To: Director, Washington DC Extension Campus
Location: Hybrid
Pay: $19.00/hour

General Statement of Job Function

The writing tutor will help the students connected to the DC extension site, either in person or remotely via Zoom:

  • support on writing structure, style and composition
  • support on organizing ideas, incorporating research and thesis statement
  • Training and support with the integration of Chicago Style/Turabian Citations

Essential Functions

  • Provides direct tutorial support for Master’s-level students during fall, spring, and summer semesters. 
  • Edits Master’s-level writing assignments as requested.
  • Provides monthly reports of all students tutored and papers edited to the DC Campus Director.
  • Seeks to build connections and relationships with students.
  • Looks for opportunities to improve student engagement and academic success.
  • Conducts a writing boot-camp near the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.
  • Maintains contact with the Denver Seminary Writing Center for updated resources and policies for assisting students.
  • Collaborates with faculty and administrative staff to ensure that writing support aligns with course objectives and academic standards. Regularly communicate with the Writing Center and other departments for updated resources.

Secondary Functions

  • Editing will be offered at no cost to the DC students.
  • Document the hours provided to students to ensure equitable access for DC students

Education/Training

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of scholarly research process and extensive writing styles
  • Fluent in Chicago Style Turabian Citation formatting

Qualifications

  • Committed personal relationship with Jesus Christ required and a lifestyle consistent with the Seminary’s Community Values and Behavioral Commitments.
  • Agreement with Denver Seminary’s statement of faith.
  • Basic knowledge of tutoring styles and techniques
  • Excellent writing skills, and high proficiency in grammar and editing are necessary
  • Proficient in using remote communication tools like Zoom and Microsoft Office Suite to facilitate virtual tutoring and track student progress.
  • Intermediate knowledge in the following areas:
    • Tutoring styles and techniques
    • Turabian citation style
    • Grammar and punctuation rules
    • Thesis and paper organization

  • The Writing Tutor/Editor will contribute to the retention and completion of programs for Denver Seminary students by efficiently and appropriately resourcing the writing needs of students.

Typical Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Normal office working conditions including computer usage may require occasional standing, walking, long periods of sitting, climb stairs, balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
