Dr. Gregg Okesson received a B.A. from Wheaton College (Psychology and Bible), an M.A. from Wheaton Graduate School (Biblical Studies), another M.A. from Wheaton Graduate School (Intercultural Studies), and a Ph.D. from the University of Leeds, U.K. (Theology and Religious Studies).
Dr. Okesson is a third-generation missionary to Africa. Before joining Denver Seminary in 2026, Dr. Gregg Okesson served as a faculty member, Dean, and Provost at Asbury Theological Seminary (2011-26) and at Scott Christian University in Kenya, East Africa, where he served as Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and as a lecturer in theology and mission (2001-2011). Prior to this, he was a pastor in central New York, worked in Student Development at Wheaton College, and served as a church planter among a Muslim ethnic group in north-central Tanzania. Dr. Okesson and his family lived in East Africa for 13 years.
Dr. Gregg Okesson is the author of Re-Imaging Modernity (Wipf & Stock, 2012) and co-author of Advocating for Justice (Baker Academic, 2016). He also received the Christianity Today 2021 Book Award for A Public Missiology: How Local Churches Witness to a Complex World (2020). He co-edited Navigating Complexity in Our World (2021) and Public Theology for Global Witness (2023). He has a new book on leadership coming out in 2027, published by Baker Academic.
Dr. Okesson is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Baltic Methodist Theological Seminary in Estonia and of the Association of Christian Theological Education in Africa (ACTEA).
More broadly, Dr. Gregg Okesson is interested in theology, missiology, and global public realities, particularly those related to poverty, development, power, leadership, institutions, and societal engagement.
He is married to Dr. Kimberly Okesson, a Professor of Communication, and they have two adult children, Isaiah and Anna.
