Position Summary

The Vice President of Finance and Campus Operations (CFO) provides executive leadership of the Seminary’s financial affairs and business operations. Duties include planning, developing, and administering the integrated financial services of Denver Seminary as well as campus support operations in the areas of: Auxiliary Enterprises, Risk Management and Security, and Campus Facilities. The VPF oversees, develops, and implements budgeting and fiscal policies and processes, provides and/or oversees strategic financial analysis, maintains internal financial systems and controls, and certifies the Seminary’s financial integrity.

The CFO also serves as Treasurer of the corporation and is appointed by the Board of Trustees. This individual leads with integrity, transparency, and operational excellence while modeling servant leadership and fostering a culture of stewardship and collaboration.

Essential Functions

Strategic Leadership

  • Contributes to the development of the Seminary’s strategic plan and oversight of fiscal services as a member of the Seminary’s executive team, the Administrative Committee (AC).
  • Provides financial input, guidance, application of financial information and leadership in strategic decision-making for the long-term growth of the Seminary.
  • Acts as the primary point of information and analysis for the President and the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees on strategic financial and accounting issues affecting the entire organization.
  • Evaluates and advises the President and the AC on the financial impact of new programs, strategies and initiatives on the short- and long-term financial health of the Seminary.
  • Develops and manages an effective working relationship with the Finance Committee, Audit Committee and Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees.
  • Protects Seminary assets through the development and execution of comprehensive and integrated risk management strategies, policies, and procedures.
  • Acts as primary point of contact with legal counsel and coordinator for all legal and business compliance matters. Stewards ongoing legal matters providing research, updates, planning and recommendations to the President, Board and AC.
  • Acts as institutional Title IX coordinator in compliance with Department of Education (Office of Civil Rights) requirements.

Fiscal Leadership

  • Plans, develops, organizes, implements, directs and evaluates the Seminary’s fiscal function and performance.
  • Oversees the design, implementation and support of financial systems and related policies and processes to identify and manage income and expenditure within the Seminary’s departments and programs.
  • Oversees and monitors the development, preparation, integration and implementation of the annual operating budget and the annual capital improvement budget of the organization.
  • Provides leadership for continual improvement of the budgeting process through educating department managers on financial issues impacting their budgets.
  • Manages the Seminary’s banking relationships to provide maximum benefit for the financial health and long-term growth of the Seminary.
  • Optimizes the handling of bank and deposit relationships and initiates appropriate strategies to enhance cash position.
  • Develops reliable cash flow projecting and reporting mechanisms to ensure adequate cash balances to meet the operating needs of the Seminary.
  • Manages the Seminary’s debt and provides leadership in obtaining financing to meet strategic growth opportunities.
  • Oversees the preservation and growth of the Seminary’s investments in conjunction with the Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees.
  • Oversees the Seminary’s annual audit, communicates the outcome of the audit to the President and the AC, and guarantees compliance with all appropriate auditing standards.

Tactical Leadership

  1. Oversees the development and execution of strategic plans in the areas of Human Resources, Technology Services, Auxiliary Services and Campus Facilities.
  2. Provides directional leadership for the Directors of Human Resources, Technology Services, Auxiliary Services and Campus Facilities.
  3. Directly oversees the operations of the Financial Services department.
  4. Works with the Provost to coordinate effective execution of the Seminary’s budget, financial goals, processes and policies throughout the institution.
  5. Effectively delegates responsibility, provides direction, adequately resources and meaningfully evaluates all direct reports under her/his leadership.
  6. Models servant leadership and creates a culture of genuine teamwork.

Education/Training

  • A minimum of a BS or 10 plus years equivalent combination of education and experience; CPA and/or MBA a preferred.
  • At least five years of experience as CFO or equivalent, preferably in a nonprofit organization with a budget of at least $10 million.
  • Experience in a senior financial management role, partnering with executive staff, resulting in the development and implementation of creative financial management strategies.
  • Significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including compliance and reporting.
  • Successful track record of providing fiscal management in a complex, multi-faceted organization, preferably within non-profit and/or higher education.

  • Knowledge of financial planning and budget management principles, policies, laws and regulations as applied to non-profit, educational, public and government institutions.
  • Ability to design, develop, compile, analyze, interpret, and present complex financial models, reports, statements and/or projections.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in technologies, techniques, issues and approaches in area of expertise.
  • Adept at handling multiple priorities and activities in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment while delivering timely and accurate results.
    Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
  • An experienced and excellent negotiator in contractual relationships.
  • A good educator who is able and willing to mentor staff and students in their areas of experience and expertise.

Normal office working conditions, including computer usage, may require occasional standing, walking, long periods of sitting, climbing stairs, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
