Denver Seminary Appoints Dr. John Moreland as Senior Director of Advancement

Denver Seminary announces the appointment of Dr. John Moreland as Senior Director of Advancement, bringing two decades of transformational leadership across higher education, military service, and pastoral ministry to guide the Seminary’s strategic partnerships and philanthropic vision.
Dr. Moreland will lead Denver Seminary’s advancement initiatives, cultivating meaningful donor relationships and strengthening the partnerships that sustain the Seminary’s mission to equip leaders for God’s work of renewal in the world.
His appointment reflects both continuity and strategic development. Having served Denver Seminary as Director of Black Church Programs, Director of the Urban Track through a Lilly Endowment Grant, and adjunct faculty, Dr. Moreland has demonstrated exceptional capacity for mission-centered growth and investment. Under his leadership, enrollment in the Black Church Programs more than doubled while he developed curriculum and faculty pathways that strengthened theological education for African American students. As principal researcher on a nationally funded project, he stewarded $500,000 in grant funding to expand access and excellence in theological education.
As a gifted pastor, church planter, military chaplain, Air Force commander, educator, and alumnus, Dr. Moreland is uniquely equipped to express and build support for the transformational value and impact of a Denver Seminary education. He has a remarkable grasp of how the seminary equips students to make an outsized contribution in both the Church and society.
“Dr. Moreland embodies what we seek to cultivate in every graduate,” said Denver Seminary President Mark Husbands.“ John demonstrates an enduring commitment to Christ and lives out his calling with faith, hope, and love—qualities that bear witness to the beauty and hope of the Gospel. Together, we share the conviction that advancement is fundamentally about stewardship: of relationships, resources, and the sacred trust placed in us. It is a joy to share with John the privilege of walking alongside our donors and friends as they discern how God might be calling them to participate in the formation of leaders who will serve God’s work of redemption and renewal in the world.”
Reflecting on his appointment, Dr. Moreland said, “Denver Seminary has profoundly shaped my journey of faith and leadership. I’m honored to serve an institution that understands education as formation—preparing leaders who will engage the world’s deepest needs with courage, wisdom, and the transforming truth of the gospel.”
Dr. Moreland’s leadership philosophy centers on mission-driven stewardship and the conviction that advancement work serves a higher calling: equipping future generations of leaders to bring God’s renewal to a world in need.
