Today, many Christian women feel called to ministry and wonder if there is a place for them in church leadership. So, if you find yourself asking, “Is there a place for me in ministry?” The answer is yes. God uniquely gifts women for a variety of ministry roles throughout the church.
At Denver Seminary, we recognize that God calls women to serve Him through full- and part-time ministry. Whether you are just beginning to clarify your leadership gifts or are a seasoned woman of faith, we offer degrees and certificates for you. We know that each woman brings an innovative mindset that allows us all to grow as we work together to equip others to fulfill their unique callings in ministry, which is why we’ve also designed a Women’s Leadership Cohort.
Biblical Examples of Women in Ministry
The Bible has much to say about the role of women in ministry. Throughout the Old and New Testaments, we read about women who ministered as judges, prophets, leaders, and fellow laborers. These women were favored by God, full of wisdom, and bold in their faith and actions. Scripture is clear that women contribute greatly to God’s plan.
The Old Testament is full of examples of remarkable and influential women in the ministry. Miriam was used by God as a prophet during the time of Exodus when the people of Israel made their journey out of Egypt. Deborah served both as a prophet and a judge in her role leading God’s army. Huldah was also prominent in religious reform under King Josiah, demonstrating that female prophets were crucial contributors to great events. Queen Esther bravely disregarded her own safety to save her people.
In the New Testament Anna is identified in Luke 2 as a prophet who served in the temple. Many women, like Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Susanna, ministered to Jesus Christ and provided financial support. Paul often referred to the role of women in ministry, which was remarkable considering the cultural norms of that day. His letters speak about Priscilla’s ministry in Ephesus. Several women were named in the early church as co-workers among the disciples.
Women in Church Leadership Today
In the last several decades, there has been much controversy surrounding the topic of women in ministry. Regardless of personal beliefs on matters like the ordination of women, the importance of women in church leadership can’t be denied. Women tend toward compassion and their spiritual leadership, action-driven characteristics, wisdom-filled lessons, and love for worship are invaluable in service to Jesus Christ.
