Dr. Patrick T. Smith
Curt Thompson, MD
Dr. Bob Cutillo

Dr. Patty Pell, director of The Gospel Initiative, highlights the inseparable connection between faith and action saying, “Throughout the Gospels, we see Jesus’ ministry marked by both spiritual teaching and compassionate healing. Yet today, deep inequities in physical and behavioral healthcare persist across racial, economic, and social lines, challenging us to reflect His love through justice and care for the most vulnerable.”

This free event will challenge attendees to consider how Christian faith informs the pursuit of just and ethical healthcare, how medical professionals can advocate for systemic change while maintaining resilience, and the roles individuals and churches play in promoting health equity.

Featured Speakers

Dr. Patrick T. Smith is an associate research professor of Theological Ethics and Bioethics at

Duke Divinity School and director of the bioethics program at the Trent Center for Bioethics, Humanities, and History of Medicine. A recipient of multiple prestigious awards in bioethics, Dr. Smith’s work focuses on the ethical dimensions of healthcare access and the integration of theology with public health.

Curt Thompson, MD is a board-certified psychiatrist, author, and speaker specializing in the intersection of neuroscience, human relationships, and Christian faith. His latest book, The Deepest Place, explores hope and resilience in the face of suffering.

Dr. Bob Cutillo is a retired family physician who has devoted his career to faith-based healthcare for underserved populations in the U.S. and internationally. Dr. Cutillo is the author of Pursuing Health in an Anxious Age and writes on how a biblical view of health can contribute to a more just healthcare system.

This event is an opportunity for healthcare professionals, church leaders, and engaged community members to explore faith-informed approaches to health justice. Whether attending in person or virtually, participants will leave with renewed insight into how they can contribute to a more ethical and compassionate healthcare system.
