Seminary Credit Hour Policy
One credit hour is defined as that which reasonably approximates a minimum of 50 minutes of instructional activity involving direct contact of faculty with students. For example, a three-credit-hour lecture course would typically need to meet the equivalent of three 50-minute blocks each week, for a total of 2,250 minutes per semester.
Consistent with USDOE and HLC, a credit hour represents the amount of work governed by intended and clearly identified student learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is the equivalent of:
- 50 minutes of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours out of classroom work completed independently by the student,
- 50 minutes of online, faculty-directed instruction and a minimum of two hours ‘off-line’ work completed independently by the student, or,
- 50 minutes of faculty-directed instruction through the format of lab work, internships, hands-on practica experience, and a minimum of two hours of additional academic work.
